Corruption, public insecurity, and subjective well-being in Mexico

Mexico maintains a high position among world happiness indices even though it faces important social and public issues. This raises concerns about the conformation of the subjective well-being of the population. Based on different national surveys, two analyses are conducted, one descriptive and the other econometric, to reveal how different affects, and satisfactions in the personal realm and the perception of contextual and sociocultural factors such as corruption and public insecurity are related to perceptions of well-being. It is found that the perception of well-being gives more weight to personal factors and less to context factors when those problems are more prevalent. However, in scenarios in which corruption is more prevalent, the perception of more corruption and more well-being can coexist. Evidence suggests that society has developed a tolerance for this problem and accepts it as part of the social fabric.
