Abstract

The emerging consensus regarding the central role of the state on promoting development must go beyond the simplistic perspectives of the New Institutionalism that analyzes the “autonomy” of the state from an organizational point of view. We should take advantage of the return to the state in order to retake (pull through / turn to) Max Weber original project, which breaks down the analytical barriers between state, market and society. This article explores the classic debates on the nature of the modern state, discusses the contributions of the contemporary heirs of the Weberian project and proposes a new “strategic–relational” approach inspired by the work of Bob Jessop, which overcomes the epistemological gap still present in some of the contemporary works in comparative political economy.
