Abstract

The subject of these research notes is the interaction between trade policy–making institutions in Latin America, on one side, and the political economy of international relations, on the other, in this context of nested games. There are several topics and many levels of analysis interwoven. Therefore, the intention of this paper is rather exploratory. Firstly, there is the international realm, with the transformation of the multilateral trading system from tariff–reduction rules to a more complex institution aiming at the convergence of domestic regulations in trade and trade–related policies. Secondly, there is the domestic realm, and the various ways through which Latin American governments and societies have coped with the new international context of power and rules while attending to matters of national interest.
