Abstract

After mentioning how multiple meanings have been given to the term "autonomy" in the field of international relations, this paper studies the different senses of this concept in Latin America, as well as its links with various approaches in other regions. Next a deep change in the meaning of the term is proposed considering the new circumstances in the world and in Latin America. An emphasis is placed on how this situation promotes the passage from a traditionally defined autonomy to another one built within a context of relations the authors cal1 "relational autonomy". This notion is structured based on contributions to the matter stemming from classic political theory, political Sociology, gender studies, philosophical and sociological Psychology, and complex thinking theory.
