Abstract

This paper aims at inspecting the concepts used during the last decades regarding the field of social division of space or urban segregation in Latin American cities. Furthermore this work intends to show some of the obstacles and progresses found in quantitative researches related to social
segregation in Mexican cities, in the context of an assessment of the state of the art in the country. The article ends with some reflections on the contradictory role of cities regarding their segregating and unifying aspects and the influence of the State through its different forms of intervention in the social division of urban space.
