Abstract

In this work an analysis is made of some of the effects and implications of globalization in the field of higher education in Latin America. From a discussion about the different meanings given to the concept of “globalization”, a series of institutional and systemic changes are identified in Latin American college education, aimed at building a “new” university model in that world region during the 1990s. The main hypothesis in this paper holds that the “new” model implies a deep transformation of power relationships in national educational systems and of the definition of policies implemented in that sector.
