Abstract

This work analyzes the logical and analytic difference between malapportionment (MAP) and disproportionality. Usually, both phenomena are labeled under the erroneous concept of disproportionality, which makes an analysis of the causal links between them impossible. In order to achieve such an analysis, and based on the Argentine system electoral, the impact of MAP on disproportionality and on tour significant variables of political representation is demonstrated: 1) the make-up of the assembly, 2) absolute number of legislative parties, 3) effective number of legislatives parties, and 4) types of parties. To start with, the levels of over-and under-representation in each electoral district they are estimated and described, assessing the differences in the value ofvotes in each oRe (malapportionment). Then, a contrafactual analysis is carried out in an attempt to demonstrate the impact ofmalapportionment as analysed earlier.
