Abstract

Based on the analysis of results of the 1993 elections, the existing relationship between the elections and the political system in Chile are discussed. The interactions and mutual conditioning, however, do not appear as a direct or lineal causal relationship. The authors examine the success of the Concertation of the Parties for Democracy and its transformation into a strategic alliance, which helped in attaining the governability of democracy and important cultural and institutional changes in the country.
