Abstract

First a brief account is made of the main results of the general elections in Argentina, which took place on October 24, 1999. Second, some of the reasons that explain Menem’s decline and the relative victory of the Alianza. Finally I review what I think are the main political consequences in these elections: the consolidation of the democratic alternation,
the new and balanced institutional allocation of political power, the reinforcement of a pragmatic political center, and the possible upcoming of a new dynamics in the party system, which I tentatively define as “bialiancist”.
